UFC – The Calm After the Storm

After a couple of short statements from Conor McGregor, that particular hype train is going to be parked up for a while as it prepares for it’s next journey in what will likely be July. We discuss what another loss at UFC200 might mean for the King. Next up for the seasoned fans is Cormier vs Jones in April. We’ll come back to that one next month.

Football

A mixed weekend of Premier League and FA Cup action saw Man City cough up another two points to Norwich, all but ending their title hopes, while Arsenal’s season continues to crumble after having been dumped out of the FA Cup by Watford. Man United continue to make people physically ill by watching them, while Everton toss Chelsea on the FA Cup scrap heap.

In Spain Barcelona won easily, Real Madrid struggled past Las Palmas with a last ditch goal, and Gary Neville’s Valencia players look like they’d rather be on the beach than playing football. They fell to last placed Levante this weekend.

Most of the excitement from the Champions League this week looks like it will be provided by Bayern Munich vs Juventus who are currently tied at 2-2 after the first leg. We’re predicting a canter into the quarters for Barca and Man City, and a workmanlike victory at home for Atletico over PSV Eindhoven.

Rugby

The Six Nations is coming to a close for 2016 and England have taken the title from Ireland. Next week they travel to Paris with thoughts of a Grand Slam large in their minds. France lost to Scotland this weekend and confidence will be low going into the last game of their second dreadful campaign in a row. Ireland hammered Italy in Dublin and gave some cause for optimism. A good performance against Scotland next week will give the Irish something to look forward to heading into the Summer.

Basketball

The Golden State Warriors remain on track to beat the Chicago Bulls single season win-loss record of 72-10. They’re 59-6 with 17 games to go, albeit there are some tough ones on the run in. This leads us on to a discussion about body types in basketball, stemming from a chapter in the book we mentioned a few weeks ago called The Sports Gene, by David Epstein .
